Sylvia N. Martinez, D.D.S.

What do you do professionally? I am a family and cosmetic dentist and have been in practice for 31 years. For the first 16 years I worked side by side with my father, Ralph Navarro, who was also a dentist in San Antonio.

What is it that you like best about your job? Dentistry is constantly changing and developing new techniques and technology.  It is important to keep up with advancements in my profession, and it is a continual learning process, which I enjoy. I receive the greatest satisfaction in helping people achieve the good dental health they want and deserve and ultimately seeing a patient walking out of the treatment room with a big smile on their face, knowing that I helped make that difference.

When did you know that you were in the right place in your career? I knew I was in a good place in my career when I discovered that I was serving as a role model to other young women through my actions in and out of work. They saw that I enjoyed my profession while finding a balance between family and work.

How would you describe your leadership style? Leading by example. Working alongside my team, encouraging  them to be A-level members. Customer service is very important to me. In my office, we consistently hear from patients that theirs is the best dental experience they have ever had.

Would you encourage your children to go into the same field? As a matter of fact, my daughter, Dr. Kelly Owen, is now a dentist who is completing a three-year orthodontic dental program at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas.  I never pushed her to go into my profession, but just like I did with my own father, my daughter was quietly taking notes.  That is why it is so important that we lead by example.

Who were your mentors? My father definitely had the greatest influence on me.  When I started in dentistry, there were very few female dentists  as role models. While I was in dental school, I remember being told by certain people that I should be home making cookies and that as a student I was occupying a slot that should have been given to a man.  My father was always there to offer support and advice, always believing in me.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I like experimenting in the kitchen with new recipes.  Cooking is very much like chemistry; I guess that is why I enjoy it so much. I also enjoy going with my husband, Sean, to the various farmer’s markets, visiting art galleries and taking walks along the wonderful walking trails in our city.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life personally and professionally? That’s an easy answer — my husband.  He has been my biggest supporter and always encourages me to continue to find and maintain that balance in life and work.

How do you find balance in your life? Career, community and home life. I always remember that I am a wife and mother first who just happens to be a dentist.  Work should not be the only thing that defines you.  If you enjoy life and your family, that will shine through in your profession.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
My father always told me the most important thing to remember at the end
of the day is “Did you do your best, did you give it your all?”
My husband’s advice is also very simple, but so true: “Enjoy life.”

I was a single mom of three daughters for 10 years, and during that time I was in sales for Keith Zars Pools. I enjoyed working with people, so I knew
that was what I wanted to do. As my children were moving on to college, I looked at the State Farm agent opportunity and decided this was for me, and so did State Farm!

Would you encourage your children to go into the same field?
Absolutely; it is challenging and satisfying work. As a matter of fact, I talk to my girls about it now. In addition, being a State Farm agent is a great opportunity financially to provide for one’s family.

Who were your mentors?
My personal mentor is my best friend and husband, Garry. He has loved and encouraged me even when I thought there was no way I could do something. He is the reason I am
where I am in my life now. God is my mentor too … I wouldn’t be where I am now without putting him first!

Probably Pretty Woman or Eat Pray Love.

What type of music do you like?
Classic rock, alternative rock, jazz — I like it all. I listen to music as much as I can. I go to the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin with my daughters every single year. I am going to see Harry Connick, Jr. at the Majestic in November. He is so great!

Daisy Charters and Shuttles
Founder and CEO

What do you do?
Whatever needs to be done, which includes supervising 57 employees and covering any desk in the office. I’ve been here 33 years.

What is it that you like best about your job?
The fascinating people I meet — war heroes, basketball stars, famous singers and movie stars and wounded warriors.

Education/Major:
R.N. at Huron Road Hospital, affiliated with Case Western Reserve.

What career path led you to where you are today?
I had opened a cooking school and took my students on different field trips to restaurants, herb farms and cheese factories. I found I liked coordinating
the trip better than the cooking part, so I closed the school and went into the tour and transportation field.

When did you know that you were in the right place in your career?
In 1980, when I started, a woman could not sign for a loan. Her husband had to sign or even an 18-year-old son. I had to work to get that changed. I spent 13 years putting
my husband through medical school, internship and a surgical residency. He was willing to sign, but I refused. This time it would be for me.
After seven years of trying, that law was changed, and I got a $125,000 loan. In the fall of 1987 I knew I was in the right place. I could do this!

Would you encourage your children to go into the same field?
All of our children have college degrees. A few years ago I told them I couldn’t do this forever and gave them three options: 1, I can sell the business and give you the
proceeds. 2. I can hire someone to run the business and give you all of the profit. 3. You can try it for two years and if you don’t like it, go back to offer one or two. They agreed to try it for two years, and that was nine years ago. They love it.

Who were your mentors?
My husband, first of all, was always encouraging, and my friends in NAWBO kept me focused and moving forward.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
In my day a girl had three options: a nurse or a teacher or get married — that covered it! I chose nursing. It got me off the farm and into the city.

What person do you most admire?
Eleanor Roosevelt for her courage to do things women would ordinarily not do. Her ambition, her fearlessness and her resolve to stand by her convictions in spite of all of the criticism.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am writing a book, You Are Driving Me Crazy, a story of all of the diverse things we have faced along the way.

What is your all-time favorite book?
The Joy of Cooking by Rombauer and Becker.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life, personally and professionally?
Personally: my husband, who always encouraged me but never associated in any way because as a surgeon he had no time. Now he wants to buy stock, but it’s not available.
Professionally: Franklin Roe, my first business partner. He taught me everything I needed to know about the industry, planning the trip and costing it out.

What brought you to San Antonio?
My husband was stationed here at Randolph AFB as a flight surgeon.

What community or not-for-profit groups are you involved with?
NAWBO, National Defense Transportation Association, Go Red for Women, Professional Tour Guide Association, Medical Alliance, Wayside Chapel, Shop with a Cop for disadvantaged children and NAWBO’s Million Dollar Round Table.

Do you have a favorite restaurant?
One of my favorites is Mi Tierra. I love to take visitors there. They love it and ask, “Do you live like this all of the time?” Yes!

How do you find balance in your life — career, community and home life?
I am blessed with an overabundance of energy and love a full schedule, so I find time for everything.

What is the best advice that you have ever received?
From my first business partner, Franklin Roe: “Never lear to drive a bus, give your employees (52 men and four women) something that you can’t do.” True! I need them. It was great advice. I had wanted to learn to drive a bus.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
Most everyone knows I started with $200. Few know that our gross sales this year will exceed
$5 million.

Cathy Bureau: President, Green Home Realty, LLC

Spotlight-Bureau
Cathy Bureau
President, Green Home Realty, LLC —
d/b/a Green Home Realty and Green Commercial Realty

What do you do? I’m a Certified Real Estate EcoBroker, commercial practitioner and negotiator, which means I help people buy, sell, build, and lease residential and commercial real estate with an emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability.

Length of time at this job: Six years.

What is it that you like best about your job? Helping people make their dreams come true! A funny thing about real estate, whether you’re helping a family buy a house, an empty nester transitioning into a new phase, or helping somebody grow their business, it’s always about making people’s dreams come true.
Education/Major: MBA in marketing strategy from UTSA, class of 2005.

What career path led you to where you are today? I’m writing a book about women and their choices; It’s a five-year work in progress. But having struggled with working versus caring for my children physically and emotionally, I’ve had to make some difficult decisions that weren’t always in my career’s best interest. I worked in the travel industry after earning my marketing degree until I realized I needed to be home with my new daughter. I worked as an independent marketing consultant while primarily being a stay-at-home mom. Thinking I was ready to enter the corporate world, I pursued my master’s degree. It is with that sacrifice of time (and money) that I realized nothing is more important than my family so I sought out opportunities that would allow me to balance life and work. That’s the real challenge for today’s career women. During grad school I worked for the Staubach Company, a tenant representation company, when I walked away from a couple of corporate opportunities to pursue a career in real estate. I obtained my real estate license and worked my way through a couple of firms until I was ready to take action on my entrepreneurial spirit. I launched Green Home Realty and Green Commercial Realty in 2010.

When did you know that you were in the right place in your career? I’ve always been a helper. In fact my spiritual gift is hospitality. I’ve also always had creative ideas, so not being THE owner, my great ideas and creativity were stifled. As an independent contractor with various real estate firms, the same thing occurred. Eventually I braved it up to launch my own real estate company and enjoyed creating something from nothing. But when I started helping people buy, sell and lease, with an eco-friendly business model, I knew I wasn’t just helping others achieve the American dream, I was helping them build a better life. I can’t say exactly when I was enlightened to that realization, but I can say that it’s what drives me. I know this is where I belong.

Who were your mentors? Oh that’s a great question. Not so much in real estate as I’ve never really found anyone that I thought I wanted to emulate, but in general, I respect and admire Brenda Barnes, former CEO of PepsiCo for choosing to walk away from a CEO position to raise her teenage boys. “Children need you physically when they’re babies, but they need you emotionally when they’re teens,” she said.

What brought you to San Antonio? I was living in Flower Mound, Texas, when Scott and I had our beautiful baby girl Alexandria and baby boy Cory. We wanted them to know their extended family since Scott and I moved often with our families; military, etc. When they were still preschoolers, we packed up and moved to San Antonio to join my parents and brother.

What do you like most about San Antonio? This is a city of friendly people, much friendlier than other Texas cities. But it also has a rich history of architecture and culture. I’m Latina but didn’t grow up in that culture so I appreciate it and the German heritage in a way non-Latinos do. When you combine friendly with culture and beautiful architecture, you get a rich, vibrant city that nurtures the soul. I also like the weather and Hill Country, but that’s more about geography than people.

What community groups or not-for-profit groups are you involved with as a volunteer? I’ve been part of the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas; in fact I was on the committee that renamed the organization after San Antonio merged with two other council areas.. I was a troop leader, camp leader, cookie mom, service unit director and adult volunteer trainer. I served on the Alamo Forest Partnership Board, am currently serving on the Alamo Heights Chamber of Commerce board, and Holistic Chamber of Commerce board. At my church I serve on the welcome team and am assisting with our expansion project; which makes sense, being that I am a commercial real estate broker.

What do you like to do in your spare time or day off? Jazz festivals. Cultural festivals. Kayaking. Taking my dogs to the park. Watching Shakespeare in the Park at the Botanical Garden with my love. Having lunch with my kids. Not in any particular order. I’d like to learn to golf but the most progress I’ve made is buying cute hot pink golf shoes. I like to sew and write – I’m in the middle of writing the book I previously mentioned, and I like to pet my dogs, a lot. One of my dogs, Leonard, is getting a bald spot from petting, I think. But he likes the petting; he’s a rescue dog from SAPA.

What person do you most admire? Ronald Reagan. I value our freedom, and I value his commitment to freedom. I also value that he was a great man of character. That’s important to me.

What is your all-time favorite book? My all-time favorite book is the Bible. It’s always relevant and applicable. I like the app version because I can find what I need more easily .I get practical advice from Leviticus, parenting and marriage tips from Ephesians, wisdom from Proverbs., joy from the Book of Psalms. I get peace from the red words.

What type of music do you like? It depends on the time of day really, and my location. I like alternative, Latin, Jazz, blues, and classic rock music. I love Led Zeppelin and Santana. Stevie Ray Vaughn. Steve Miller Band – now I’m dating myself!

Who has been the biggest influence in your life personally and professionally?
Scott Bureau, my life partner and husband of 27 years! Besides being the love of my life and my best friend, Scott is my business partner. He is supportive personally and professionally, even when everyone else thought I should get a “real job” – you know, the kind with a guaranteed paycheck. But he sees how much my clients value what I offer in a way that others can’t; that I help make the world a better place. He’s my arm candy at awards dinners and networking events though that’s not his cup of tea. He does it without complaint. He’s also the vice president of Green Home Realty, LLC, managing finances and technology. Well, lately my son, Cory, handles the technology, but still Scott oversees those things that aren’t my strong suit. Scott exemplifies love and support the way it was meant to be between husband and wife. I’m a lucky woman!

How do you find balance in your life – career, community and home life?
For one thing, I work from home as often as I can. I used to lease in a high-rise, but I find that clients prefer to meet in their home or place of business, so I gave up my brick and mortar, which is not so uncommon these days. Not having to commute means not losing precious time or being interrupted by unrelated conversations by colleagues. I focus on tasks for a more efficient work process. I am self-disciplined enough to do that well.
I think it’s imperative to balance God-family-work in that order. As a member of the Christian community, I regenerate every Sunday. I fill my cup with God’s abiding love. I spend quality time with my husband and children. As my daughter Alexandria likes to say, “You’re my rock (mom and dad),” and I see home as the place of refuge. Sharing mealtime, supporting each other in our daily activities and creating special moments such as mom and daughter pedi days are important to me.
Work is awesome — it pays the bills and it helps others — but ultimately it’s a job, and that’s why I don’t let it run my life.

What is your favorite relaxation strategy? Sleep is probably the hardest thing for me because I’m a high-energy girl with a creative spirit, but I try very hard to sleep 8 hours daily. I use an eye mask and nature sounds often. I strongly believe in sleeping 8 hours a day because it makes you more efficient and effective. During the day, however, I often step away to have lunch with friends, even those I may have not seen since I was in elementary school. Those are the most fun, actually, because we’ve all changed so much. But my favorite relaxation technique is to stretch on my yoga mat while watching a Hawaiian vacation or listening to Brothers Cazimero, quintessential Hawaiian music

What are your goals? I’d like to be a better person tomorrow than I am today. That’s not so much a goal as it is my personal mantra. It makes me have to learn something every day or reflect upon what I have learned in the past. Professionally, I’d like to be the best certified green real estate company in San Antonio. In that, I will be able to help more people live more sustainable, value-based lives and have a healthier family.

What is the best advice that you have ever received? Failure is a stepping stone to success. As Sir Winston Churchill once said, “Never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” (The Unrelenting Struggle, 1941)

People would be surprised to know that I … am one-sixteenth Chinese. I know I am from Texas and Mexico by way of los parientes, but it came to light in more recent years that my maternal grandfather was ¼ Chinese. I’ve always thought he looked a little Asian. It probably explains why I felt so at home in Hawaii and prefer Asian food over Mexican.

After medical school, I completed an internal medicine residency and served as an internist at the 121st Evacuation Hospital in Seoul, Korea, for one year. I was very lucky to be selected for another residency at Walter Reed, this time in dermatology. Following those three years of training, I worked at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, where I was chief of dermatology, and at the San Antonio military hospitals – Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center — for a total of eight years. To become fellowship trained in Mohs surgery and procedural dermatology, I moved to Atlanta for one year for intensive training at Emory University. To tell you the truth, my favorites are my patients who defended our freedom in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Most people just see some gray hair – I see people who are exceptionally interesting, courageous and full of personality and character. I very much cherish them. As far as San Antonio, the metropolis – I treasure the recent expansions of the linear parks around the city. I love that San Antonio has big city amenities but still has a small town atmosphere.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? I wanted to get married and raise a family. I have a beautiful daughter of whom I’m very proud.

What career path led you to where you are today? I was in the banking industry for 20 years and wanted to try something totally different. It was the fact that I would still be working face to face with people and helping them that convinced me to make the move. I was ready to try something totally different.

When did you know that you were in the right place in your career? I’m still not completely certain that I am, but I do like helping people, and I believe that the services eESI has to offer help people. This makes me feel that I’m in the right place.

Who were your mentors? Joe McKinney, vice chairman of Broadway Bank. He was the one that taught me to ALWAYS step outside my box and get out of my comfort zone.

Would you encourage your children to go into the same field? Absolutely, as long as they are happy and enjoy people. I think we need to figure out for ourselves what makes us happy. I believe everybody is different, and that’s what makes the world go round.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life personally and professionally?
My Dad. Unfortunately, it’s too late to tell him, but as I’ve become “wiser,” I realize it was my Dad that gave me my work ethic, truthfulness and just trying to live life to the fullest.

What brought you to San Antonio? My parents. I grew up in San Antonio.

What do you like most about San Antonio? I love that San Antonio is so people- friendly. We have everything at our fingertips, and, of course, our five-time NBA champions, the San Antonio Spurs.

Do you have a favorite restaurant? Bourbon Street rates pretty high on my list.

What is your favorite relaxation strategy? A Grey Goose dirty martini.

Do you have a favorite dish? I just love to eat, period. Presentation can make any dish delectable. I love seafood.

How do you find balance in your life – career, community and home life? I’m not sure there really is a “balance.” I believe in giving 100 percent to everything, but I have to prioritize every day. I know I cannot do it all … all the time. I also make certain that if I cannot give 100 percent or don’t really enjoy giving the effort, I remove it from my plate.

What are your goals? I’d prefer to refer to it as my “bucket list.” No. 1 is to finish my MBA, hopefully in 2016. With the completion of my MBA, I’d like to be an adjunct professor within the Alamo Community College District. Most of all, I want to be happy at whatever endeavor I pursue.

What is the best advice that you have ever received? To treat people like I would like to be treated. Being nice doesn’t cost anything. People would be surprised to know that I have a 10 handicap … just kidding!

Name: Krastina K. Reynoldsspotlight-Reynolds

Company: Choicolate – Artisan Chocolates

Title: Owner/Chocolatier

What do you do? I craft specialty chocolates with natural ingredients and premium European chocolate.  I also do recipe development and testing for new products as well as production management for the boutique menu.

Length of time at this job: One year, seven months.

What is it that you like best about your job? Making customers smile. Creating an authentic treasure that always brings joy.

Education/Major: Music; I am classically trained in Bulgarian folk music.

What career path led you to where you are today? I am a professional Bulgarian folk singer and voice trainer.  I have traveled the world as a member of the Bulgarian Voices Angelite from Sofia, Bulgaria.  Following music studies at New Bulgarian University in Sofia and touring with the choir, I moved to South Korea, where I worked with a band briefly before teaching and tutoring English in Korean schools and privately.  While in Korea for just over nine years, I met my husband, Leroy, and gave birth to our first son.  God’s providence led us to San Antonio following my husband’s U.S. Army retirement.  I wanted to continue in my profession as a voice trainer here in the U.S.; however, I was given the opportunity to become a chocolatier and owner of Choicolate – Artisan Chocolates.  The business was established in 2010 by a Korean couple, who decided to leave the business for personal reasons.  Leroy and I intended to start a small European- styled café here in San Antonio; however, we discovered Choicolate and loved everything about the business.  We bought the business in early 2014 and have continued the tradition of handcrafted, all-natural ingredients with premium European chocolates.

When did you know that you were in the right place in your career? The moment I recognized Choicolate as our means to show God’s love to others and to see others experience the joy of simple pleasures.

Would you encourage your children to go into the same field?  I’d encourage our sons to find purpose for their lives, to decide what brings joy; their spiritual gift.  And, “yes,” especially if it is their God-given gift.

Who were your mentors?  Life.  I’ve been exposed to lots of people, including family and professional colleagues.  No one particular person is a mentor when you’ve been exposed to lots of gifted people.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? I’ve always wanted to teach, especially children and particularly music.

What do you enjoy doing on a day off? Spending time with my family and traveling whenever time permits.

What is your favorite thing to do in San Antonio?  San Antonio is very family- oriented, so I wouldn’t call one thing in particular my “favorite.”  It’s so rich in history and child-friendly.  Pools, parks and the children’s museum.

How would you describe your personal style? Casual stylishness and elegance.

How would you describe your leadership style? Authoritarian, but slightly mothering (which is probably the same thing).

What is your favorite vacation? Mountains with snow.

What is your all-time favorite movie? Chocolat (2000) with Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp.

What is your favorite cell phone app? Holy Bible.

What type of music do you like? Contemporary Christian and contemporary music.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life personally and professionally?

I put my faith in God first above all things.  My grandmother is the biggest influence in my life personally and professionally.  She always believed in my ability to learn and encouraged me to study and develop my talents as well as common skills.  She instilled in me the work ethic that guides my efforts at home with my family as well as our business operation.

What community or not-for-profit groups are you involved with as a volunteer? Church choir. My time is limited for volunteerism. However, my husband and I contribute to charitable children’s events and organizations

What do you like most about San Antonio? It’s so friendly to families with children. We have two young sons, and there’s always somewhere to be or something to see.

Do you have a favorite restaurant? Korean Restaurant, Sushi Express.

Do you have a favorite dish? Bolgogi.

How do you find balance in your life – career, community and home life?  Praying and reading the Bible

What is your favorite relaxation strategy?  Getting my husband to massage my feet. Singing.

What are your goals?  Personally, to be Godly as well as the best wife and mother.  Professionally, to be an industry leader in touch with customers.

What is the best advice that you have ever received? Enjoy life.  Don’t take it too seriously. Laugh.

What is it that you like about your job? I enjoy working under leadership that believes in and challenges me. What I like the most is how my company empowers me to succeed through learning.

When did you know that you were in the right place in your career? I saw other opportunities at different places, but New Horizons showed me a clear path and provided me a chance to grow; that’s when I knew I was where I belong.

Would you encourage your child to go into the same field? Of course! I’d want my son to choose the work field of his choice. However, I would strongly encourage him to pursue a career in information technology.

What type of music do you like? My car radio typically stays tuned on country or rock. However, if you took a look at my Pandora, you would find I enjoy all genres.

Who has been the biggest influence on your life personally and professionally? In my personal life, I would have to say my in-laws. I see how hard they work and how much they have accomplished. In my professional life I must say my current manager (Mark Villareal). He is the most amazing leader I have ever had. I would follow him anywhere just to be led by such great leadership.

What brought you to San Antonio? The city life and atmosphere brought me here. I was raised in a small town just southeast of San Antonio called Nordheim, with a population of 322 people. In some cases, when you grow up in such a small town, you just can’t wait to get to the city.

Do you have a favorite dish? Honestly, anything my husband cooks. He puts effort into his cooking, and he enjoys knowing we enjoy the food.

How do you find balance in your life—career, community and home life? Reading helps me find balance. I recently read a book called One Minute Manager that really helped me.

What is your favorite relaxation strategy? I love to laugh, so laughing and listening to music would be my two relaxation strategies.

What are your goals? My goal is to become a million dollar producer in the upcoming year. Also, I hope to continue growing as a leader and develop other leaders.

What is the best advice that you have ever received? Setting goals is the first step to turning the invisible to the visible.

People would be surprised to know that I … am a really good pool player. I grew up in a small south Texas town. With only a couple of activities in a small town, it was easy to pick up the love of pool.

Bess Zowarka, Owner/ Stylist

Heights the Salon and SpaSpotlight-Zowarka

What do you do?  I make the world a more beautiful place through my clients.  When people look good, they take their best self out into the world.

Length of time on job:  14 years.

What is it that you like best about your job?  Every day, I have the pleasure of interacting with San Antonio’s most fascinating people.

Education/Major: Art history — only because civil engineering had way too much math, and business seemed like a second skin based on all the entrepreneurs in my family.

What career path led you to where you are today? Truthfully, because I was an athlete in high school, I was unable to have an off-campus lunch.  A counselor informed me of a cosmetology program offered on another campus … needless to say, I fell in love with the art form.

When did you know that you were in the right place in your career? Every time someone sits down and says they have heard or read such great things about me.

Who were your mentors?  I consider myself a pupil of life.   Coaches, teachers, clients, family and friends have taught me so many positive lessons.  Sadly, I have also had “mentors” that taught me what not to be.  For all, I am truly thankful.

What did you want to be when growing up? A veterinarian.  I guess that’s why we have two dogs (Kip and Bertie), one guinea pig (Bev), two turtles (Spike and Jewels) and three fish (identity unknown).

What person do you most admire? My husband, Philip Martin.  He joined the Army after 9/11 and did multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.  We met, married and merged our family.  A year ago I found out I was pregnant, and two weeks later Phil was diagnosed with cancer.  His oncologist ordered one of the most radical treatments of chemo and radiation for over 10 months.  All the while, he maintained his full-time job, his Army Reserve position and continued working toward his master’s degree in medical administration.

What is your favorite thing to do in San Antonio? I love to play tourist. This city that I am proud to call my home, has world-class museums, World Heritage Site missions and the beautiful River Walk — just so much to enjoy.

How would you define your personal style? Refined, relaxed, collected.

How would you describe your leadership style? Leading by example.  My motivator has always been my mom’s family mantra:  “If it is meant to be, it is up to me.”

What is your favorite vacation? Any place with crystal-clear water, white or pink sand.

What do you like to do in your spare time?  My spare time is most always spent at my family’s ranch. There, cell service is limited, but wildlife, family fun and games are not!

What is your all-time favorite book? The Last Lecture. It evokes an internal awakening to remember that time is fleeting, life is short, and it reminds you to relish all successes big and small.

What is the best movie you have seen in the last year and why? The Revenant. It is a testament to the human spirit — what inner strength, determination and fortitude can get you through in spite of the odds against you.

What is your favorite cell phone app? Favor—Pick up and delivery anytime.

What type of music do you like? I do love some funk.

Who has been the biggest influence in your life personally and professionally? My grandfather.

What do you like most about San Antonio? I love how San Antonio really gives that hometown feeling but boasts the amenities of a metropolis.

Do you have a favorite restaurant?  Fina’s Kitchen is a family staple. We have their tacos at least once a week.

How do you find balance in your life – career, community and home life? I don’t think I have ever fully found the balance, but it is always something I will work hard to try to achieve.

What are your goals? Be a great mother, a great wife, and always be committed to be the best person I can be.

What is the best advice that you have ever received?  It was from my grandfather, who very much had a way with words … His motto in life was, “It takes more time to do something half-assed than to just do it right the first time.”

People would be surprised to know that I … have a ton of Beastie Boys memorabilia, and I am a “super-fan” of sorts.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET ROGERS

Name: Brooklynn Chandler Willy

Company: Texas Financial Advisory

Title: CEO and founder

What do you do? I acquire clients, manage money, pay bills and referee employee issues. I’m also a radio show host for the Texas Financial Radio show that airs every Sunday at 1 p.m. on KTSA 550 AM.

Length of time at this job: I have been there since January 2008

What is it that you like best about your job?   There is no ceiling.  I can make it as big as I can dream.

Education/Major: Baylor University, Bachelor of Arts: business, political science and Spanish.  St. Mary’s School of Law: Juris Doctorate.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?  A lawyer…

What brought you to San Antonio? Law school and the desire to be closer to family.

What career path led you to where you are today? I did not set out to do what I am doing, much less own my own company.

I thought I would be an attorney but once I was in law school, it did not feel right.  I remember thinking on the first day of law school, “Oh no, this isn’t going to work,” but I could not quit. During my third year, I bought a book about thinking outside the box of careers you could have with a law degree —without being the traditional lawyer.

It was not until I was assisting an insurance salesman’s clients with their estate plan that I saw the light.  I realized at that moment that I could use my law degree and do something I found joy in.  Praise the Lord!

What are your goals?  I would like to grow my business and have a team of the best tax strategists, investment advisors and estate planners in all of South Texas. #DreamBig

Who has been the biggest influence in your life personally and professionally?
Personally, I think my family has the biggest influence on me. Professionally, I think Tony Robbins has had the largest impact on my professional career.

What person do you most admire?  There are so many people in this category for me, but I would have to say the prize goes to my mother.  She’s a boss and a champion in every way.

How would you describe your leadership style? Collaborative.  I am constantly asking my staff for input.  I like to see it from their point of view.  I tend to get stuck in the weeds, so when I ask for their input, it helps refocus my attention on what needs mending.

What community groups or not-for-profit groups are you involved with as a volunteer?  My sisters and I started a nonprofit foundation, SHMILY (See How Much I Love You) Gifts from Above.   It provides financial and emotional support for students seeking a higher education who have lost a parent while in college.  We have taken in six students so far and would love to help more.  I also give a lot to my children’s school, Buckner Fanning School at Mission Springs.

What do you enjoy doing on a day off?  One downside to owning a business is that you do not have a day off.  My brain never shuts off.  I am constantly thinking, reading and researching ways to grow my business.

What books have you read lately?  Double, Double.  E-Myth. Beyond the 401K.  Talk Like Ted. The Ministry of Motherhood. Exciting stuff, I know…

What is the best advice that you have ever received?  If you think it, you can achieve it.

Sharon K. Sra, MD

Alamo Heights Ophthalmology

spotlight-dr-sraWhat do you do?
I am an ophthalmologist. I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and perform eye surgery.

Length of time at this job:
I have been practicing ophthalmology in San Antonio for 10 years.

What is it that you like best about your job?
It’s a nice balance between clinical medicine and surgery. And it never gets boring. The technology is constantly advancing, and the surgical outcomes are becoming more precise. Most of all, it’s very gratifying to restore sight and improve quality of life for patients.

Education/Major:
I received my undergraduate degree at Baylor University. I attended medical school and competed my ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

What career path led you to where you are today?
It wasn’t until college that I decided on a career in medicine. During medical school, I considered several specialties, but after I rotated through ophthalmology, I fell in love with the specialty. I enjoyed reading and studying the intricacies of the eye and how it works. I am still fascinated by the eye and how amazing and resilient it is. It is such a small organ but very complex, and it provides us with our most valuable sense of sight.

Would you encourage your children to go into the same field?
I would love my daughter to be self-sufficient and to have a happy, meaningful life. It’s up to her to discover her strengths and interests. If she chooses to be a physician, I want it to be her decision.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to be lots of things growing up! Everything from a movie star, a flight attendant, to a journalist.

What do you enjoy doing on a day off?
Relax, sleep in, and have a lazy day.

What is your favorite vacation?
Serengeti in Tanzania. But,I love beach vacations to relax and recharge.

What book/books have you read lately?
When Breath Becomes Air

What’s the best movie you have seen in that last year and why?
Zootopia! Such a great movie! Funny and inspiring with a great message of never giving up.

Do you have a favorite dish?
I love French fries! It’s my weakness.

How do you find balance in your life — career, community and home life?
The balancing act can be hard, especially with a family. The nice thing about my field is that I can have control over my day to enjoy life away from the office. Most surgeries are planned and scheduled, but there are emergencies. We do take calls, but for the most part, it’s not too bad.

What are your goals?
To provide the best quality of care possible and to help people see as best as possible

People would be surprised to know that I … wake up at 4:30 a.m. to exercise. This allows me to spend more time with my family in the evening.

What is the best advice that you have ever received?
“Always be able to support yourself,” from my dad.

Dr. Viviana Coles

DMFT, LMFT-S, CST, PRESIDENT of
Texas Relationship Therapy PLLC

spotlight

What do you do?
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified sex therapist in private practice. I am also the lead instructor for my sex therapy certification program.

Length of time at this job:
I have been seeing clients since 2003 and have been working with sex therapy clients since 2006.

What is it that you like best about your job?
Helping individuals and couples to overcome seemingly hopeless relationship impasses is invigorating for me. I just love helping people to reconnect after disaster has struck either physically or emotionally.

Education/Major:
I received my bachelor’s in psychology at Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX, in 2003. I received my master’s (2005) and doctoral (2011) degrees in marriage and family therapy from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I became a certified sex therapist in 2006.

What career path led you to where you are today?
My high school college adviser asked me if there was anything I felt I was really a “natural” at doing. I told her I like to talk and often have friends who would come to me to share their problems. I also remember saying to her, “but that’s not a job, right?” She replied, with a knowing, “Well, actually yes, yes it is.” After that, I made a beeline for private practice in psychotherapy.

When did you know that you were in the right place in your career?
When I had clients who were returning to me to focus on new or different issues months and even years after working with them initially. That’s when I knew I was having a profoundly positive effect on their lives.

Would you encourage your children to go into the same field?
Absolutely. I secretly hope my daughter Evelyn, now 8 years old, will choose to do something similar because it really is a beautiful field to be a part of, and private practice affords many women the opportunity to share in family life as well as a rewarding career.

Who were your mentors?
I was so fortunate to attend a graduate program where so many of the greats in our field either studied or instructed. Getting excited and motivated to do great things was easy.

What person do you most admire?
I consider myself to be very fortunate to have married parents who have always supported and encouraged me to reach for the stars. But as an adult and relationship expert, I admire the teamwork they exhibit to walk through life together.

What do you enjoy doing on a day off?
Staying close to my extended family means so much to me. We are on recreational sports teams together, and we all often get together for weekly cookouts and gossip fests.

How would you describe your leadership style?
While I enjoy getting input and considering other viewpoints when I am making big decisions, as a business owner, it’s my neck on the line, so ultimately, I have to trust my gut and make sure any decisions I make are in the best interests of the company.

How do you find balance in your life — career, community and home life?
I often take a step back and assess my life on a weekly basis, making sure I have checked off the boxes that mean the most to me by the end of each week.

What do you do?
Cosmetic-plastic gynecologic surgery

Length of time at this job:
12 years

What is it that you like best about your job?
Changing the quality of women’s lives in a positive way by educating them about how their body functions and ways to improve it.

Education/Major:
Psychology major, pre-med

What career path led you to where you are today?
Never would I have guessed that I would become one of the most experienced gynecologists performing labiaplasty surgeries in the United States when I graduated from residency. My goal was to change the field of gynecology for the better by taking the best care of women that I could.

After a decade of performing routine Ob/Gyn care, it became obvious there were areas that were not being adequately addressed, including sexual function after childbirth and the impact of the extra skin of the labia majora, labia minora and clitoral hood on comfort, function and appearance. I learned to use the laser with vaginal procedures and labiaplasty, and later realized any tool is good if one knows how to use it and is properly trained. Learning from Drs. Matlock, Pelosi II, Ostrzenski and Alinsod has broadened my perspective and improved my surgical abilities.

When did you know that you were in the right place in your career?
The right place has been moving like a branch in a stream, propelling me into new opportunities of growth. During residency, there were several experiences of being there at the right place and time to help women through difficult and emotional losses or near losses. Preventing the death of an unborn baby confirmed to me I was doing what I was meant to be doing at that time. When women started expressing to me how much it improved the quality of their lives to have labia reduction surgery, I became drawn to the needs of this group, as they are not as well understood as they should be.

Would you encourage your children to go into the same field?
No. One must follow one’s natural inclinations and strengths and have a passion for what you do.

Who were your mentors?
I have been lucky to have many great teachers during middle school and high school who supported and encouraged my creative mind, including my tenth-grade English teacher, Mrs. Eleanor Dette; biology teacher, Eleonor Kiersten; and senior English teacher, Charles Tucker (he called me “Helen Of” my entire senior year). My Hebrew School principal, Phillip Shimmel, always asked me questions to stimulate my mind to ask more questions. My love of education and its ability to make us stronger has been emphasized by my two Ph.D., college-professor/post-graduate professor parents since I was a little girl.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
At different ages, I wanted to be different things, but the common thread is nature and the sciences. I have always had an interest in how the body works and how to fix things, and by 16, I was already thinking about medical school as a possibility.

What person do you most admire?
I admire strong women who have overcome adversity to achieve success for themselves and other women—Oprah is a prime example.

What do you enjoy doing on a day off?
Relaxing with friends and family, listening to music, a massage, eating good food.

How do you find balance in your life – career, community, and home life?
It’s not easy, but the transition of my practice to surgery only and focusing on outpatient procedures has allowed me to have a better balance and more family time. When my son was 3, I chose to stop practicing routine Ob/Gyn in order to be more present in his life (and my husband’s), and I have never looked back.

Karen Crouch: Bexar County Judge

I currently sit on the bench of County Court at Law #10. I have served as a judge for over two decades. I have also served as a visiting senior judge throughout the state of Texas. Being a judge is my profession, but my passion is my family. I am a wife, mother, daughter, and sister who happens to be a full-time judge.

Would you encourage your children to go into the same field?
I would encourage my kids to follow their own passions. Then, they have a job they love doing every day. The law has been very good to me, but every one of my children has their own interests.

What are the keys to balancing home and work life for you?
A supportive family. I realize it’s important to balance my career and my family life. Our family’s motto is “if it’s not on mom’s calendar, it’s not happening.” We live a very organized and disciplined life.

Tell us about your family.
I feel so lucky. I have a great family. First is my mother, who reared me to be a strong independent woman. My husband, Gerald Flores, loves me very much and is very supportive in everything I do. My three loving, energetic teenage kids are Gerald William, Nicholas, and Lillianna who are the joy of my life.

What do you love most about San Antonio?
San Antonio is a major city that feels like a small town. It is a city filled with a confluence of cultures. Its most endearing quality is the friendliness of its inhabitants.

What do you enjoy doing?
I love making family celebrations very special for our family. My parents used to call it “making memories with the children.” For example, I love the winter holidays, which were always a great time in our home. My husband and I have nine family birthdays during the week of Christmas — so it is still a very special time in our house. The season starts in November with the making of gingerbread houses. And, ends with the New Year celebration.

What do you enjoy about the holidays?
My favorite time during the holiday season is when the chaos is over. Sitting on the couch with my husband and gazing at the Christmas tree, focusing on a particular ornament that tells a story. Looking at the ornaments on the tree, we reminisce about our life adventures together through those cherished ornaments.

What is something that you have enjoyed as a mother?
Planning unique celebrations for my children, including bug parties, rocket parties, around the world parties, splatter paint parties, volcano parties, Einstein parties and many, many more. The wildest party theme we ever had has got to be the Madagascar hissing cockroach races we held inside the house.

What is one thing you do that you never imagined yourself doing?
I have become a jock mom attending cross country meets, track and field events, basketball and volleyball games. I had no interest in any of those sports before I became a mom. I enjoy being their No. 1 cheerleader. My sons, Nicholas and Gerald, say, “Mom, people in the next two counties can hear you!”

What advice will you give to your children?
Believe in yourself and follow your dreams, and remember your family is your rock.

Elizabeth Hill

Education/Major: BA Marketing

What is the main mission for your company?
We are business consultants that leverage technology to accelerate our clients toward competitive success.

Length of Service: 11 years

What is it that you like best about your job?
Learning new technologies, educating and helping our clients.

What are your biggest challenges?
Our biggest challenge is finding the right team members that fit our culture.

What career path led you to where you are today?
After receiving my bachelor’s degree, I went into retail management with Foley’s department’s stores in Houston. I was ready for a change after 11 years of retail, so I went into logistics. After the pharmaceutical company I worked for was purchased by McKesson Drug, it was time to do something different. I always had a love for technology, so I joined my husband in 2006 to assist with the business.

What sets your company apart from others?
John and I believe in continuous learning through conferences and signing up for training. Because of this, we are always looking for new technologies to offer to our clients especially due to the increased cybersecurity threats. I believe in educating our clients with what is happening in the technology. We believe a person should continue to grow, and you are never too old to stop growing.

What are some of your Resolutions for 2018?
Security will be the primary business focus since cyber threats are growing exponentially. Continue to develop and grow the business. On the personal side, exercise daily (I really do enjoy it), pick-up glass art. Finish my garden. Be more involved with the church and community. Spend time with my husband in non-work activities.

Who were your mentors?
My dad. He was a very wise man with a lot of common sense. He taught me a lot through the years. If life was challenging, he encouraged me to keep going. I was also a very shy person; he pushed me to join organizations and get involved. He did not go to college, yet he built a successful company and provided well for our family. He was very generous when a person was in need. Through the years, I have been blessed with many close friends. Through these friendships, we became mentors to each other. We share our wisdom and lean on each other. I also consider My Heavenly Father as a mentor. I lean on Him daily for wisdom.

What do you enjoy doing on a day off?
I love the outdoors and nature. I also love taking the dogs for a walk, especially when the weather is nice.

Tell us about your family.
I am very close to my family, and they are very special to me. When I can, I visit my mother and my siblings in the Houston area. I was not blessed personally to have children, but through marriage, I have a special
daughter and son-in-law, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

What book/books have you read lately?
Since I love to read fiction and educational, there are many. I have been re-reading Gino Wickman’s Traction and Get a Grip since we are going through EOS training. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni, Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton, The Good Book by Deron Spoo.

What do you love most about San Antonio?
The culture, hill country (reminder I love the outdoors), relationships I have formed since I moved here in 1993.

People would be surprised to know that I …
I love board games; I still have all my board games from my childhood. I always had an interest in cars, especially sports cars and I collect old books.
